We, the McGorman family, are proud 6th generation South Australian farmers and are the 4th generation of farmers on our property Thornby at Sanderston. Our Father, John, was born and raised on Thornby, just as his Father was before him, but he always dreamed of farming in more reliable rainfall areas where droughts weren’t so common or severe. Gradually our parents (John and Helen) transitioned our breeding flock into higher rainfall regions whilst still building the scale of our original property Thornby at home. In 2016 we made the leap over to Kangaroo Island where we now run 6,000 breeding ewes.
Consistently hearing great feedback from family and friends who we supplied lamb to encouraged us to develop our branded product to sell to the wider community in 2008. Sales initially consisted of packs sold online and then transitioned to running our own weekly stall at the Barossa Farmer’s Market. Wanting further involvement in the supply chain we purchased a butcher shop in Tanunda where we were hands-on in its management and operations for 2 years. The stall at the Farmer’s Market plus our own butcher shop provided a valuable education into what customers want and how to better meet their needs. Unfortunately, years of running ourselves a bit thin caught up with us and in an aim to simplify operations we sold the butcher shop and stopped attending the Farmer’s Market.
After a hiatus from branded lamb sales, in 2014 we were talked into entering the Lambex branded lamb competition which we ended up winning and was awarded the title of Australia’s Best Lamb. This kicked us back into action and today we now supply Thornby Premium Lamb to a number of leading butcher shops and supermarkets.
